June 4, 2010, Newsletter Issue #8: Removing Mold from Clothes

Tip of the Week

You've put away your clothing in the garage and the season has finally changed.  Just as you go to retrieve your favorite outfit, the smell hits you.  You shake it out, thinking maybe it's just the environment in your dark, damp storage area.  Upon further examination, you notice that it's mold.  What can you do to remove it?

Well, all hope is not lost.  Bleach is the first choice at a rate of about 1/4 cup to your wash load.  If bleach may damage your clothing, try hydrogen peroxide or oxy-based cleaners.

An old fashioned method involves using vinegar.  Go outside to shake off the garment and wear gloves to brush off the mold.  Be sure you do this outdoors to avoid spreading mold in your home.

Once you have removed the mold, dab vinegar on the stain and let it sit in the sun until dry. This should kill any remaining live mold on your garment.

Now wash and enjoy!
